John 8:31-36
To the Jews who had believed in him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

  • What’s the Bible say about how much bondage a believer can experience?
  • What’s the secret to being free?

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

1 Corinthians 2

  1. The unspiritual

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolish, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.  1Corinthians 2:14

(where did we get the perception that you can’t live without sinning?)

  1. The spiritual

The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.  1Corinthians 2:15

  1. The worldly (carnal) carne’

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk not solid food for you were not ready for it. You are still not ready. You are still worldly.  For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh.  For these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. Galatians 5:17 ESV

Con Carne

  • Discernment >off<
  • Judgment >off<
  • Desires >off<

When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. “Lord have mercy on my son,: he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.” “O unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment. Matthew 17:14-18

  • Unbelieving: Not connected to God (connection issue)
  • Perverse: too connected to the world

Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:19-21

  • Prayer connects us to God
  • Fasting disconnects us from the world

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.  For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. (Family benefits)  Romans 8:12-14 NLT

  1. Set your objective.

You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. James 4:2-3

  • Declare your dependence on God (what you do first from now on)
  • Ask for forgiveness
  • Refocus on the spiritual
  • Invite the presence of God in our lives
  • Believe God for answers to specific needs
  1. Decide what you will do.
  2. Expect results

Your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear, then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer, you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I….  Isaiah 58:8-9

Under The Influence

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:31-36)

For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. (Galatians 5:17 ESV)

The progression that takes place when people feel they can’t have victory.

  • The bondage or struggle becomes a part of your identity
  • For some, you feel increasingly hopeless
    • There’s a movement in the body that has adapted to this defeat and now just consider this pursuit as (This is the crowd that is banking on God being blind to their sin because all He can see is Jesus.)
    • This growing number of people, no longer experience salvation as the greatest miracle, which transforms who you are. It actually, more resembles the greatest cover-up that disguises who you really are. So it’s senseless to strive for anything more.
  • You become defensive
  • You become a slave

The greatest misunderstanding of slavery our culture struggles with is understanding the bonds of slavery. The greatest chains of slavery will always be what humanity feels it needs. You will always serve what you feel you need.

  • There’s no such thing as an independent slave.
  • When humanity creates a dependency, it gives birth to a slave.
  • You begin to lose the life God wants for you.
  1. There really are demons

Barna Research: Four out of ten Christians (40%) strongly agreed that Satan “is not a living being but is a symbol of evil.” An additional two out of ten Christians (19%) said they “agree somewhat” with that perspective.

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 1 Peter 5:8,9

“Satan hails the skeptic and the superstitious alike!” C.S. Lewis

  1. We can be under their influence

“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need. Ephesians 4:26-28

  1. They have to flee in Jesus’ name

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:17-20

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:37-39

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.

  1. How are you confronting your struggle?
    1. Every time our culture recommends a solution it’s deterring you from a God solution. HERE’S WHY

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 2 Corinthians 10:3-4

3794 oxýrōma (from the root oxyroō, “fortify”) – a fortified, military stronghold; a strong-walled fortress is used figuratively of a false argument in which a person seeks “shelter” (“a safe place”) to escape reality.

  • A prisoner locked by deception
  • Living by something that is not true

Where’s this come from?

All the bad programming we’ve had or still getting

Why is it still at work in my life?

Because only the truth can set you free

Why can’t I get rid of it?

It’s fortified by:

  • Your will (your actions)
  • Your fear (your belief)
  • Your dependencies (your desires)

Without these fortifications, the enemy no longer has a “strong-hold” and is powerless!

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44

What do the weapons we do possess actually do?

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5

Let’s start with this tonight.

  • What do you need? (Apply the truth) stop feeding it what the world says and thinks
    • I’m not saying apply the truth to the answer to this question, apply it to the question.
  • Why? ( Apply the truth)
  • And who needs to provide it? ( Apply the truth)

These are the chains that currently bind you. This is your enslavement and only the truth will set you free from it.

What do you need?     Right now I’m asking and it’s hard to identify. It will conceal itself until it can catch you alone. It will wait for those moments you’re vulnerable. But it feels like a weight.

Now to Him who is able to do infinitely more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, Ephesians 3:20

Free Indeed/Shutting The Doors

  • Weakness #1 we dealt with our carnality. We dealt with who was keeping our house
  • Weakness #2 we dealt with the pre-existing condition of the house. It will enable the enemy to embed himself.
    • Lost coin – “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? Luke 15:8

(John 8:31-36) To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.

(Ephesians 4:26-28) “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. He who has been stealing must steal no longer…”

They rush upon the city; they run along the wall. They climb into the houses; like thieves they enter through the windows. Joel 2:9

Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven–if there was anything to forgive–I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. 2 Corinthians 2:11

“…we don’t want to unwittingly give Satan an opening for yet more mischief—we’re not oblivious to his sly ways!”  The Message

So last week we dealt with strongholds. These are the walls that the enemy is able to embed himself behind in our lives.

  • Your will (are visible by your actions)(Our wills are not always what we know are the best things for us. They are usually the things we’ve deemed to be the safest for us)
  • Your fear (identify your beliefs)
  • Your dependencies (are triggered by your desires)

If walls have doors, we want to identify them

Three Big Doors

(1 John 2:15-17) Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

  1. “Lust of the flesh” – our _passions_. (the wall of your dependencies)
  • While this topic understandably draws attention to our challenges with sexuality
  • This is the part of you that is always worried about how you feel
  • This why we saw that we will serve what we feel we need
  1. “Lust of the eyes” – our _appetite__. (The wall of fear)
  • Typically we address the areas of greed and possessions
  • Why did I attach the lust of the eyes to the wall of fear? Nothing motivates our appetites more than insecurity. Because we’ve internally wired for eternity, the absence of God creates a void impossible to fill.
  • This part of you is always thinking it’s taking care of what you need
  1. “Pride of life” – our _Position_. (The wall of your will)
  • This is the part of you that’s working to get you where you believe you belong.
  • This one gets the un-regenerated version of you in a major mess.
  • Because this one God Himself opposes.
  • Why? Because it does not honor God’s plans and purpose for you. It demonstrates your distrust in God. You want to be in charge of placement. This one hear originates in the fall in the garden.

Genesis 3:6

“Good for food – passion

“Pleasing to the eye” – appetite/possessions

“Desirable for gaining wisdom” – position

(Matt 4:3,5-6,8-9) The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” (Passion)

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down…. (Position)

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” (Possessions/appetite)

The enemy will never get tired at knocking on these doors

Three reoccurring idolatries Israel would get caught in:

  • God of Asherah – passions (temple prostitution)
  • God of Mammon – possessions
  • God of Baal – position (demon of pride and power) (25 min)

Shut the Door

  1. _Integrity__. An integer, to be whole, to be one, doesn’t mean perfect, it means honest. It’s someone who’s not going to be divided within himself.

(Proverbs 5:7-10) Now then, my sons, listen to me; do not turn aside from what I say. Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house, lest you lose your honor to others and your dignity to one who is cruel, lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich the house of another.

(Romans 6:12-14 Message) That means you must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your lives. Don’t give it the time of day. Don’t even run little errands that are connected with that old way of life. Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and full-time into God’s way of doing things. Sin can’t tell you how to live. After all, you’re not living under that old tyranny any longer. You’re living in the freedom of God.

Say _yes to God_ and _no to the devil_.

  1. _generosity_. Greed and insecurity. Can I say this? The security for this door is not in how much or how often you give. It’s about where you give first.

(Genesis 4:2-7) Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

  • It’s more than God saying, “Be faithful in giving” He’s actually saying, “YOU CAN BE faithful in your giving.” Dismiss your insecurity and you’ll find it easy to resist greed.

(Malachi 3:10-11 NKJV) “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” says the LORD of hosts.

Give God the _first of everything__.

  1. humility__. (Most visible in your worship)

(Revelation 3:7-8) What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

(John 3:30) Jesus must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.

Develop a lifestyle of _prayer_ and _fasting_.

Staying Free

(John 8:31-36) To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. • Judgment >off<
      • Desires >off<

  • Week 2 Under The Influence
    • The only weapon the enemy has is the lie, and we’re under the influence of a lie.
    • The enemy uses footholds and strongholds to maintain the positions he has in our lives.
    • Our slavery is identified by our dependencies
    • President Reagan in a famous speech once said, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down these walls!”
  • Week 3 Shutting The Doors
    • After you address the flesh issues and the stronghold issues. There will be doors that need to be closed. Openings the enemy has access to.
  • Week 4 will address the maintenance regiment you will need to incorporate to stay free

Here We Go Again

(Luke 11:24-26) “When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, searching for rest. But when it finds none, it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds that its former home is all swept and in order. Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before.”

We must learn what to do, “When this happens” So there’s a cycle that is always at play that you should understand.

  • Freedom everyone wants it. This is a spirit in all of us. It always leads to ease and comfort. Another way of saying prosperity.
  • Prosperity leads to pride and complacency.
  • Bondage

Stay Free

(Galatians 5:1) It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Freedom needs to be experienced in 2 ways.

  1. In the moment. That’s what we’ve been addressing. This where God touches you and frees you. (Deliverance)
  2. It’s also a journey. The process. We call it discipleship. And that’s how you stay free.

Luke 15:11-14) Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need.

This is a maintenance process that should never cease

  1. Admit that you need help.

(Luke 15:15-17) So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. When he came to his senses, he said, “How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!”

Do you have a place where you are able to come to your senses? People, people, people

  1. Humbly repent to God and others.

(Luke 15:18) I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

People will always have a role in God’s remedy for our course correction.

(James 5:16) Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.

Keep it private between you and God and you’ll be forgiven. But if you want God to heal you from the sin, he calls into the relationships he’s given us to get healing.

The English use of the word repent can begin to be understood by the Greek word that it is translated from.

  • This word is metanoeo. Greek lexicons generally define this word as a changing of one’s mind or sorrow.
  • The New Englishman’s Greek concordance goes on to say that it is “a change of heart and mind away from self and sin, and towards God and holiness.”

(Genesis 6:5,6) And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

It could literally be translated Burn or Destroy and then Turn Around and leave. To Repent based on scripture is to leave the place you were living in never to return.  It has been crushed, burned down, demolished and destroyed and there is no reason to return. Some can’t stay free because the old house is still standing, just in case you need someplace to stay if things don’t work out.

  1. Daily choose to reject Satan’s lies_.

(Luke 15:29-31) But he answered his father, “Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.

But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!” “My son,” the father said, “you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.

  1. Daily choose to receive God’s truth.

(Luke 15:22-24) But the father said to his servants, “Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” So they began to celebrate.

  • Robe of righteousness. We need to see ourselves as God does.
  • Ring of authority. You have his ring. The name above every name gives you access and authority
  • Shoes of peace. We have the gospel of peace on our feet
