Breaking The Pattern of Infidelity part 2

Breaking The Pattern of Infidelity is a priority in the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Understanding how the pattern unfolds is clearly illustrated in the scriptures.

Breaking The Pattern of Infidelity part 1

Biblical history records a pattern of infidelity—Israel’s repeated struggle with idolatry. Biblical prophecy warns of great apostasy in the last days. How is this pattern not a problem for the Church today?

Culture of Fruitfulness

Culture of Fruitfulness

(John 15:1-5 BSB) “I am the true vine, and My Father is the keeper of the vineyard. He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes to make it even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.

(Mark 4:13-14 BSB) Then Jesus said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of the parables? The farmer sows the word.

What is a Culture of Fruitfulness?

What is the difference between fruit and fruitful? _________________________________________

The Culture of Freedom

The Culture of Freedom

(John 8:31-36) To the Jews who had believed in him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

(Romans 6:17-18 BSB) But thanks be to God that, though you once were slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were committed. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

The Chain of Slavery

  • What is slavery?
  • What actually makes you a slave?
  • What are the real but invisible chains?
  • What’s the difference between a slave and a prisoner?
  • We will always, always, always SERVE what we feel we need!

“To know the truth” = is not a reference to the information you know or have been taught. The Bible is not teaching that your freedom is based on the accuracy of the information that you have collected.

The literal translation of these words from their origin implies something far more personal and internal. To know the truth is referring to an “applied truth”

  • Collected truth or even an understood truth.
  • “To know” is closer to your heart than it is to your head. It’s an applied truth. Applied truth is transformational truth.

There are 3 ways you can respond to this truth. Paul helps us understand

  1. The ________________________

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolish, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.  1Corinthians 2:14

  1. The ________________________

The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.  1Corinthians 2:15

  1. The ________________________

Brothers and sisters I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk not solid food for you were not ready for it. You are still not ready. You are still worldly.  For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh.  For these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. Galatians 5:17 ESV

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. OFH BIBLE STUDY – Making The Cultural Shift

Making The Cultural Shift

What’s Your Culture?

 What’s worth keeping?

– What’s not?

Is there anything about your cultural upbringing that helps you be a better disciple of Jesus?

If we’re to be a culture that identifies us as being from God’s Kingdom, what would we be most lacking?

3 common results when cultures unite.

Amalgamation refers to a blending of cultures, rather than one group eliminating another (acculturation) or one group mixing itself into
another (assimilation).

(Joshua 7:10-12 BSB) But the LORD said to Joshua, “Stand up! Why have you fallen on your face? Israel has sinned; they have transgressed My covenant that I commanded them, and they have taken some of what was devoted to destruction. Indeed, they have stolen and lied, and they have put these
things with their own possessions. This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their
backs and run from their enemies, because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction.

(Matthew 17:14-21) And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying,
“Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.” Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.” And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from
that very hour. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.

*   Our faith in God will starve at the table of this world

*   Our lack of faith is revealed by our attachment to this culture

(1 Corinthians 9:20-22 NKJV) and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might, by all means, save some.

The word “became” in Hebrew is (hayaw) and it means: to exist or have breath.

In Genesis 1:5 of the NIV  translation, “hayaw” is translated as “there was”.

God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And “there was” (hayaw) evening, and “there was” (hayaw) morning – the first day.

The word “became” in Greek (ginomai) is about birth “genesis”

How Paul was speaking sounded like: “To the Jews” I was (born) a Jew.”

  •   When is a culture a stronghold? _________________________

(1 Corinthians 1:18-20) For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

(1 Corinthians 1:25) For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

(Romans 1:18-25 NLT) But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.
And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal
praise! Amen.

  • We gave up on ____________________ and settled for the______________________.

(Romans 12:2 Message) Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.

  •  We followed our___________________ instead of our _____________________.

(Romans 8:6 NLT) So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and
peace.

  • We trusted ________________________ more than we trusted ______________________.

(Proverbs 3:5-6) Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Heart = Leb (Hebrew)

Beyt    Lamed

The word HEART in Hebrew is composed of two letters, the Lamed and the Beyt

The first letter of the Hebrew word translated into the English Scriptures as Heart is Lamed

Lamed is pictured as a Staff. The Shepherd’s Staff is used as an instrument of authority over the sheep. It can be used to comfort, protect, discipline, control and guide the sheep.

Lamed

The Lamed means Control -To Shepherd To Have Authority – To Urge Forward, The tongue – The Voice of Authority, (Staff)

The second letter of the Hebrew word translated into English as Heart is Beyt.

Beyt

House -Tent – Son – Family – Dwelling Place, Inside – Within – 1st Letter in the Torah that Identifies The Son of God
Tent / House

The Scriptures compare our human body, the body we temporarily live inside, to a TENT or a Tabernacle.

(2 Corinthians 5;1 ESV) We know, for instance, that if our earthly dwelling were taken down, like a tent, we have a permanent house in Heaven, made, not by man, but by God.

The HEBREW Picture translation for HEART is:

>  The Heart is the Controlling Voice of Authority over our tent  <

John 8:31-36
To the Jews who had believed in him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

  • What’s the Bible say about how much bondage a believer can experience?
  • What’s the secret to being free?

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

1 Corinthians 2

  1. The unspiritual

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolish, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.  1Corinthians 2:14

(where did we get the perception that you can’t live without sinning?)

  1. The spiritual

The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.  1Corinthians 2:15

  1. The worldly (carnal) carne’

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk not solid food for you were not ready for it. You are still not ready. You are still worldly.  For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. “Lord have mercy on my son,: he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.” “O unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment. Matthew 17:14-18

  • Unbelieving: Not connected to God (connection issue)
  • Perverse: too connected to the world

Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:19-21

  • Prayer connects us to God
  • Fasting disconnects us from the world

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.  For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. (Family benefits)  Romans 8:12-14 NLT

  1. Set your objective.

You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. James 4:2-3

  • Declare your dependence on God (what you do first from now on)
  • Ask for forgiveness
  • Refocus on the spiritual
  • Invite the presence of God in our lives
  • Believe God for answers to specific needs
  1. Decide what you will do.
  2. Expect results

Your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear, then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer, you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I….  Isaiah 58:8-9
